About RTR

Stuart Photo
Stuart Lazarus began Run to Remember in 2002 as a way to honor the memory of his mother and to promote the cause of hospice care. His marathon training was first and foremost about his mother. He had the opportunity to run through the streets of Columbus, Ohio with his mother’s name on the back of his shirt. He talked about her with people who knew her and had heard of her. Run to Remember can give you the same opportunity.

Frannie Lazarus died in her early 60’s of colon cancer. At the end of her life, she was cared for by a hospice program in Columbus. At the time, hospice care was relatively new to Columbus and, as an early patient of this new form of care, Frannie was a pioneer. Her will to live her life fully, even at its end, demonstrated a quiet tenacity familiar to all who encountered her. Run to Remember is the program Stuart established in Frannie’s honor and memory.

The RTR Compact—How It Works

What You Get
A great deal. You get to honor the memory of loved ones by dedicating your training and your run to them; you get the satisfaction of having trained for and completed a distance race that few others even contemplate; and you get the satisfaction of having supported and promoted the cause of hospice care in America.

What We Give
We provide you with the finest training support, covering many aspects of preparing for a distance run, training schedules containing distances to run or walk for every day of your preparation, answers to frequently asked questions, and contact with others who are in training.

We also provide you with a full set of online fundraising resources to assist you in seeking donations in support of hospice care. The tools on RTR’s site are the backbone of the Active Network’s Active Giving program. There is no better set of support tools. You are able to create and customize your own personal fundraising page and then e-mail its link to your friends and family.

We also send you an RTR shirt to wear on race day. It will contain a large space on the back which is designed for the name of your loved one. Wear it with pride and with our thoughts and congratulations. It is one more way for you to promote hospice care.

What We Ask
Use our resources to contact your friends, family, and other hospice supporters and ask them to support your efforts with a donation to the National Hospice Foundation. You can also contact anyone who knew the person in whose memory you are running.  They can donate simply and securely online through your fundraising page you send to them. Fundraising will be as easy as a click of the mouse. Simply e-mail out your link to family, friends, and other hospice supporters! The donations not only support important work in the promotion of hospice care in America, but also honor the person or persons in whose memory you are running.

So join in, honor the memory of someone you love, spread the word about hospice care, raise money for The National Hospice Foundation, and train for the long run.

RTR Designates Columbus Marathon Featured Race

Run to Remember has designated The Columbus Marathon as its featured fall race at the marathon distance for Ohio and the contiguous states.

As in other RTR featured races, this means that hospice runners will find “friendly folks and friendly territory” on the streets of Columbus, Ohio every October.

“Columbus has been one of this country’s leading communities in supporting hospice care.” said Stuart Lazarus, National Director of Run to Remember “The Columbus Marathon is one of this nation’s premier marathons. It seemed only fitting to us that we forge a more formal relationship.”

Next fall is the 25th anniversary of the Columbus Marathon. It promises to be a sensational period in the history of the marathon. “If you are interested in a great marathon,” Lazarus continued, “and if you are passionate about hospice care in America, run with us in Columbus in October.”

It’s easy to register with Run to Remember and it’s free. Either go to www.runtoremember.org or register through the Columbus Marathon site by clicking on Training and then scrolling down until you see information about Run to Remember.
