Participation

Many other training programs celebrate survivors and help fund important research about disease cure. Run to Remember features what is uniquely important about hospice care and connects it to training for a distance race. Memory and honor are at the heart of this program.

Because people who receive hospice care do not survive, we are left to celebrate their memory and honor their lives. It is not often that we can dedicate five months—the amount of time it takes to train for a marathon—to the memory of a loved one.

I want to train with Run to Remember. What races can I train to run in?
You may train to run in any marathon or mini-marathon. Generally, though, we suggest running in a local area marathon because there are no transportation expenses. Unlike other programs, Run to Remember does not pay travel and registration expenses so that the costs of the program are kept low. In this way more dollars are sent to The National Hospice Foundation and to a local hospice program of your choice.

I have never run/walked competitively before; can I really train to run/walk my first marathon?
Many of our runner/walkers will have never been avid runners before. Most people even with no prior experience can finish a marathon provided they follow a structured, progressive training program start to finish, without falling off of the training program. It is a matter of future commitment more than a matter of previous experience.

I may not be able to do all the training. Can I still complete a marathon?
The key to completing a marathon (running or walking) is having the preparation/training in - without it, accomplishing your goal will be very difficult!

How do I get a training calendar for the race I enter?
Go to the training portion of the site and you will find it. Or, simply click here. You will be able to obtain a customized training calendar for your race that provides you with running distances for every day of your training period.

I don’t know the first thing about running, diet, shoes etc., and don’t want to look foolish in trying this. Will any advice be given regarding these topics?
Yes! Many of our participants will be relative beginners at running/walking, so don’t feel like you are the only one. We will provide information on many topics regarding training for a marathon. We will teach you more than most avid runners know before the program is over.

What if I am too slow?
Our programs are designed to teach you to finish, not to necessarily do it fast. Don’t worry about your speed. You will be in good company as many of our runners intend to walk the marathon. The goal is to finish a marathon, and that is lofty enough. You can worry about breaking world records when you attempt your second (or next) marathon!

How will I know what to do for fundraising and when to do it?
Just go to the Fundraising Support section. There you will find every sort of information to assist you in your fundraising for the National Hospice Foundation from creating a list of potential supporters, to creating your own fundraising web page or letter to them.

What if several friends want to participate in the program together?
Wonderful. Form a team. Give your team a name. Compete with other teams in your community. It can be fun and challenging as well.

How do I stay in touch with the staff at Run to Remember?
Don’t worry about it. We are always available to you to respond to questions you have at any time. The easiest way is to simply e-mail us.

The memorial aspect of Run to Remember is what really appeals to me. Do you help with that part too?
Honoring the life of a loved one is the heart and soul of Run to Remember. Running and training are means to this end. Hospice professionals specialize in not only care at the end of life, but also in grief therapy. They understand personal loss and create ways to cope with loss in constructive ways.

I am not very good at raising money. Frankly, I don’t like it much. Can you help?
We make it easy and provide all the support you need and then some. And, because we make it an integral part of creating a living memorial to your loved one, it comes naturally and you can be very proud to participate in this aspect of the program.

What if I want to honor the memory of more than one person?
We make that part of Run to Remember too. Run to Remember actually printed the names of over 40 people on the back of the shirt of a runner in one marathon!

Is the only support for me on the web?
Absolutely not! While Run to Remember provides “virtual” support for runners in races everywhere, staff we also provider ways for you to link with local running groups for training. Check out our forum for this information.

Why running and honoring the memory of a loved one? What makes them go together?
Training for an endurance event requires that you devote substantial and regular time over many months. So does honoring the memory of a loved one. We have simply combined the two, and it works wonderfully. If you have lost someone dear to you, the training period will provide you with daily time to focus on this loss. When you complete the program, you will have a better sense of closure and an enormous sense of physical and emotional achievement.

    Why should I do this?
There are as many reasons why people participate with Run to Remember as there are runners who do the program. But they have several things in common. They all are passionate about hospice care because they have seen the benefits it brings to families at the end of life. They want to train for and run or walk a marathon. They feel Run to Remember lets them combine these two interests. Also, the program encourages them to dedicate their training and races to the memory of a loved one or loved ones.

So, how do I get started?
Just register!! Use the button at the top of every page to register with us. It’s free.

I'm having trouble with the site. What do I do?
The site is supposed to work for you. Probably the fastest and best way to get help is to send an e-mail to stuart@runtoremember.org. He has seen a lot of common site problems and can most likely get you on your way. However, if you are still stuck and want to talk to a real human being, call the National Hospice Foundation toll free number at 877-470-6472 and tell them you have an "RTR Related Site Question." They will either have the answer or get you the answer.
